Key Stretch Begins With Central Missouri
MARYVILLE, Mo.-Northwest Missouri State welcomes 19th-ranked Central Missouri, winner of seven straight, to Bearcat Arena tonight for a 7:30 p.m. tip.
It's the first ranked foe Northwest will face this season, though the Bearcats' next three opponents are currently found in the top 25. Northwest concludes the first half of the MIAA slate with Central Missouri, Southwest Baptist and Missouri Southern, which sport a combined record of 40-6 (.870).
The Bearcats (6-8, 1-6 MIAA) got off the schneid last weekend by getting its first conference win at Truman. Elijah Allen scored a career-high 24 points and Hunter Henry added 22 points and 13 rebounds, his third consecutive double-double.
Northwest played for the first time without point guard Ben Haarman (8.5 ppg) and coach Steve Tappmeyer announced Tuesday that Haarman is no longer with the team. Mike Larsen ran the point Saturday, had career highs of eight rebounds and seven steals and dished out six assists.
The Mules (12-2, 5-2 MIAA) began the season 5-0 before dropping its first two conference games on the road at before-mentioned Southwest Baptist and Missouri Southern. The team hasn't lost since, averaging 83 points per game and holding opponents to an average of 62.
Junior Sanijay Watts and senior Joey Young are the inside-out combo for the Mules. Watts shoots a league-best 60 percent from the field. Young hits three 3-pointers per game and averages nearly 15 points.
Feeding them the ball are senior De'Andre Byrd and junior Alex Moosmann, who has the best assist-to-turnover ratio in the MIAA. Byrd averaged 14 points last season against the Bearcats.
Northwest swept Central Missouri a year ago, winning 77-62 in Maryville and 59-49 in Warrensburg. The Bearcats have won 11 of their last 13 games against the Mules inside Bearcat Arena.
