Bearcats Ready For Hillyard Classic

Game Notes (.pdf)

MARYVILLE, Mo.-Fresh off a 46-point drubbing of Peru State in its season opener, the 16th-ranked Northwest Missouri State Bearcats are ready for a pair of challengers in Rockhurst and Arkansas Tech at Missouri Western's Hillyard Classic Friday and Saturday in St. Joseph, Mo.

Both games will be played at MWSU Fieldhouse on the Griffons' campus and both will tipoff at 5:30 p.m.

Rockhurst was 9-18 a year ago, but has won all three exhibition games including an 86-79 victory against Division-I Loyola University Chicago last Friday.

The Hawks lost their top two scorers from a year ago, but have a healthy Aaron Hill, a 6-foot-1-inch guard who averaged 13 points two years ago before an injury sidelined him for all of last season. Hill's made 13 three-pointers and averaged 24 points in exhibition play. He's also 17-of-18 from the free-throw line.

The Wonder Boys of Arkansas Tech have started the season with blowout wins against Northeastern State and Texas College, but before that, took Division-I Drake to the wire, 57-51, in an exhibition match in Des Moines, Iowa. Drake was an NCAA tournament qualifier a year ago.

Arkansas Tech returns four starters from a team that finished 18-12 and 8-6 in the Gulf South Conference. Senior guard Chad Henderson averaged 11 points a season ago.

Northwest got 20 points and eight rebounds from lone senior Hunter Henry against Peru State. The Bearcats began the game with a 29-3 run. Elijah Allen scored 14 points and Edriss Floyd added 11, both off the Northwest bench.

The Bearcats shot 62 percent from the floor while holding the Bobcats to 32. Northwest forced 26 turnovers and had 14 steals.

Northwest and Rockhurst last met during the 2005-06 season. That game was also played at Missouri Western and the Bobcats escaped with a 90-81 win in double overtime. Northwest and Arkansas Tech haven't met since the 1963-64 campaign.
