Men's Basketball Ranked No. 16 in NABC Preseason Poll
KANSAS CITY, Mo.-Two days after being picked to finish fifth in the MIAA, the Northwest Missouri State men's basketball team was awarded a national ranking of 16 in the NABC Division II Pre-Season Coaches Poll Released Thursday.
It's the third consecutive season the Bearcats have earned a preseason national ranking. Northwest was fourth in the NABC pre-season poll a year ago, climbed as high as No. 3 and finished at No. 19.
Northwest won the 2008 MIAA Tournament and was the second seed in an NCAA regional tournament. The Bearcats advanced to the round of 32 before losing to eventual regional-champ Central Oklahoma. Northwest finished 24-6 overall and 12-6 in the MIAA, which was good enough for second place.
The Bearcats return two starters and four letterwinners from last year's squad. Senior forward Hunter Henry, the 2007 MIAA Player of the Year, led the Bearcats with 13.6 points and 7.3 rebounds a year ago.
Defending MIAA regular season champ Southwest Baptist is the only other conference team listed in the top 25. The purple Bearcats are No. 12. Central Missouri and Nebraska-Omaha are receiving votes.
Findlay (28-5), which advanced to the Elite 8 a year ago, is the preseason No. 1 team in the land. South Carolina Aiken (27-4), Bentley (34-1), Florida Southern (24-9) and Augusta State (27-7) round out the top five. Defending national champion Winona State (38-1) begins its title defense at No. 9.
Northwest will play an exhibition contest at home Nov. 3 against Livin' The Dream. The 2008-09 campaign tips off Nov. 18 against Peru State inside Bearcat Arena in Maryville.
