CBS College Sports Network To Broadcast MBB at Central Missouri
MARYVILLE, Mo.-Two of the most storied men's basketball programs in Mid-America Intercollegiate Athletics Association (MIAA) history will take the stage in front of a nationwide audience Feb. 21 when Northwest Missouri State travels to Warrensburg, Mo., to take on Central Missouri at 11 a.m. on CBS College Sports Network.
The Bearcats and Mules is one of five Division II men's games to be shown on the Network during the 2008-09 season. It will be the first nationally televised Northwest basketball game.
Northwest and Central Missouri have combined to win 28 MIAA championships and make 30 NCAA tournament appearances. Five of the last seven MIAA tournaments were won by either the Bearcats or Mules and each program has four titles in all.
Four-time MIAA Coach of the Year Steve Tappmeyer has led the Bearcats to nine 20-win seasons in the last 11 years and to two Elite Eights in the last seven. Northwest's all-time leader in career wins, Tappmeyer enters the 2008-09 season four wins shy of 400.
Kim Anderson, the 2005 MIAA Coach of the Year, has led the Mules to two MIAA championships in his six seasons. The Mules finished 31-4 during the 2006-07 campaign and advanced to the program's second Final Four (1984).
Northwest swept Central Missouri last season for the first time since 2003-04. The Bearcats went on to win the MIAA tournament and advanced to the round of 32 in postseason play before finishing with a record of 24-8.
The Mules finished 18-10 last season, 11-7 in MIAA play (tie for third), but failed to reach the NCAA playoffs for the first time in four seasons. Central Missouri began the year without a single player having ever started a game in a Mules uniform.
The Feb. 21 date is the second half of the regular season home-and-away dual between Northwest and Central Missouri. The first meeting takes place Jan. 14 at Bearcat Arena in Maryville.
