Men's Basketball Schedule Announced

MARYVILLE, Mo.-The Hillyard Classic in St. Joseph, Mo., and the River City Classic in San Antonio, Texas, highlight the 2008-09 Northwest Missouri State men's basketball schedule released Tuesday.

The Bearcats finished 24-8 last season while winning the MIAA conference tournament and advancing to the NCAA playoffs for the 12th time in program history.

Head Coach Steve Tappmeyer is four wins shy of 400 collegiate victories entering his 21st season at Northwest. He's led the Bearcats to three conference titles and to the NCAA tournament in eight of the last nine seasons.

Northwest opens its 2008-09 campaign at Bearcat Arena Nov. 18 against Peru State. The Bearcats will compete at Missouri Western's Hillyard Classic Nov. 21-22 against Rockhurst and Gulf South Conference member Arkansas Tech, which was 18-11 a year ago.

The Bearcats open MIAA play Dec. 3 at Emporia State. Northwest hosts Fort Hays State Dec. 29 in its first league game in Maryville. The Bearcats are 134-20 at home the last 11 seasons (.870).

For the fourth year in a row, the Bearcats will compete at the University of St. Mary's River City Classic. Northwest will compete against Midwestern State and Eastern New Mexico of the Lone Star Conference Dec. 20-21 in San Antonio.

Conference-rival Missouri Western enters Bearcat Arena Jan. 7. The Bearcats complete the home-and-away series Feb. 14 in St. Joseph.

New to the MIAA is the Nebraska-Omaha Mavericks, who host Northwest Dec. 13. The Bearcats host the Mavericks Feb. 4.

The MIAA tournament will be played March 5-8 at Municipal Auditorium in Kansas City. The Bearcat men and women swept tournament titles last season.
