Northwest Can Be No. 2 or No. 3 Seed

The sports information staff at Northwest Missouri State has studied Wednesday night's results and taken a shot at all the MIAA tournament seeding possibilities based on Saturday's games. The unofficial results are as follows:

Northwest will be the No. 2 seed with a win at Fort Hays Saturday.

Northwest will be either the No. 2 or No. 3 seed with a loss at Fort Hays Saturday. Here are the possibilities:

1. four-way tie for second place (NW, FH, CM, MSSU) - Northwest would be the two seed

2. three-way tie for second place (NW, FH, CM) - Northwest would be the three seed

3. three-way tie for second place (NW, FH, MSSU) - Fort Hays would be the two seed, Missouri Southern would be the three seed, Northwest would be the four seed

4. two-way tie for second place (NW, FH) - Fort Hays would be the two seed, Northwest would be the three seed.

Rationale:

1. The four team's records against each other are as follows: Northwest (4-2), Fort Hays (3-3), Central Missouri (3-3), Missouri Southern (2-4).

2. The three team's records against each other are as follows: Northwest (3-1), Fort Hays (2-2), Central Missouri (1-3).

3. The three team's records against each other are as follows: Northwest (2-2), Fort Hays (2-2), Missouri Southern (2-2). Fort Hays is the only team to beat Southwest Baptist, thus they would be the two seed.

Northwest and MSSU have identical records against the top teams in the league until you get to Washburn and Central Missouri (which would have identical MIAA records). Northwest's and Missouri Southern's combined records against those two teams are 2-2. Ultimately the tiebreaker comes down to both team's record against Pittsburg State. Northwest swept the Gorillas and Southern split, thus Northwest would be the three seed (Emporia State could also be in the mix, but the result would be the same).

4. Fort Hays and Northwest would have split their season series, but Fort Hays was 1-1 against Southwest Baptist and Northwest was 0-2 against SBU.
