Defense Fuels Northwest's Season-Opening Win
MARYVILLE, Mo.-Northwest Missouri State held Baker to 14 first-half points and placed four in double figures to beat the Wildcats 76-44 Friday night at the Ryland Milner Classic. It was the season opener for the fourth-ranked Bearcats, who improved to 19-1 in season openers under coach Steve Tappmeyer.
Andrais Thornton had a game-high 12 points and nine rebounds in his Northwest debut. Hunter Henry, Matt Withers and Lance Sullivan added 10 points each for the Bearcats. Nick Iversen and Heath Baird came off the bench to lead Baker with 11 and nine points, respectively.

Northwest made its first four shots of the second half and quickly extended its lead to 20. Andy Peterson knocked down the Bearcats' first 3-pointer of the night to make it 39-19 with 15 minutes remaining. A 3 by Sullivan gave Northwest its largest lead, 68-29, with seven minutes left to play.
Henry reached double figures for the 28th straight time dating back to last season, which ties him with Scott Fleming for the longest streak since the 2002-03 campaign. Henry added seven rebounds and two steals, one which led to a break-away dunk in the second half.

Howard saw the court for the first time since the 2005-06 season and had seven points on 3-of-10 shooting. Howard missed all of last season with a leg injury.
