MIAA Preseason Basketball Polls Released

KANSAS CITY, Mo.-The Northwest Missouri State men's basketball team has been picked to finish first in the MIAA standings and the women's team is picked to finish third in the 2007-08 preseason coaches poll announced Monday during the league's media luncheon at the Marriott Hotel.

The men's team picked up all nine available first-place votes to collect 81 points in the poll (coaches are not allowed to vote for their own teams). Central Missouri, last season's co-champion alongside Northwest, received one first-place vote and was picked to finish second (68 points). Pittsburg State (65), Emporia State (51) and Missouri Western (41) rounded out the top five.

Emporia State, who returns All-American Michelle Stueve, are picked to win the women's crown. The Lady Hornets received six first-place votes and 78 points. Conference tournament champ Washburn received four first-place votes, 76 points and is picked to finish second. The Bearcats received 58 points. Central Missouri (51) and Missouri Southern (50) were fourth and fifth, respectively.

The Bearcat men were 24-7 last season and 15-3 in league play. Northwest returns four starters including MIAA Most Valuable Player Hunter Henry, who averaged 17.6 points and 7.5 rebounds a year ago.

MIAA Freshman of the Year Lance Sullivan returns for his sophomore campaign after averaging 11.4 points and 2.7 assists. Mose Howard sat out last season with an injury, but averaged 13 points as a junior during the 2005-06 season.

The Bearcat women were 18-12 last year and 10-8 in conference play. The team returns its top four scorers from a year ago including junior Meghan Brue, who averaged 12.7 points and 6.2 rebounds last season. Seniors Mandi Schumacher and Kelli Nelson averaged 11.7 and 10.5 points, respectively. Senior Lauren Williams was named to the league's All-Defensive team a year ago and averaged 9.7 points and 5.5 rebounds per game.

The men's team begins its 20th season under head coach Steve Tappmeyer at home Nov. 16 against Baker. The women's team begins its ninth season under head coach Gene Steinmeyer at home Nov. 16 against Evangel.
