Northwests Men's and Women's Basketball Teams Qualify for NCAA Division II Tournament
INDIANAPOLIS - ( mens bracket) ( womens bracket) The Northwest Missouri State men's and women's basketball teams were chosen in the field of 64 for the NCAA Championships, announced tonight by the NCAA offices. For the men, it is their 11th appearance in NCAA history and seventh in the last eight years while the women are making their fourth overall trip, first since 2004.
The men's squad (23-6), who earned the No. 4 seed, will take on No. 5 seed Pittsburg State on Saturday, March 10 at the No. 1 seed, Central Missouri. PSU took down Northwest, 76-70 in the conference tournament semifinals on Saturday. Northwest is 0-1 all-time against the Gorillas in the NCAA postseason having dropped a 85-70 decision during the 1998 regional's. This season, PSU holds a 2-1 mark against the Bearcats.
Saturday's quarterfinal winner faces the Central Missouri and St. Edwards's (Texas) victor on Sunday with the regional final scheduled for Tuesday evening.
Overall, the men are 10-12 in the NCAA's advancing to the regional finals in 2006 in Bolivar, Mo. Sophomore forward Hunter Henry, who was named to the MIAA All-Tournament Team earlier today, leads the club in scoring (17.9) and rebounding (7.7).
The women hold the No. 7 seed and will battle the Lone Star South Division Conference Champions, the Lady Buffaloes of West Texas A&M, who sit at No. 2. The game will be played on the campus of Missouri Western State on Friday, March 9 with the winner going against No. 3 seed Washburn or No. 6 seed Angelo (Texas) State on Saturday. The women's regional championship is set for Monday evening.
The Bearcat women made the NCAA playoffs back in 2004, 1990 and 1984 holding down a 1-3 overall record. The lone win came against Lewis (Ill.) back on March 6, 1984 in the 81-63 contest.
Northwest and West Texas A&M last squared off on Dec. 20, 2004 in Honolulu with the Lady Buffs coming away with a 71-50 victory. The Bearcats (18-11) are led by sophomore Meghan Brue's 12.3 points per game.
