Bearcats Pick Up 20th Win in 75-60 Victory over Missouri Southern
MARYVILLE - ( stats) Sophomore forward Hunter Henry recorded his eighth double-double of the season with 20 points and 10 boards to lead the No. 18 Northwest Missouri State men's basketball team to a 75-60 victory over Missouri Southern this afternoon. The victory marks the 15th straight home win at Bearcat Arena for Northwest.
The Bearcats move to 20-5 and 13-3 in the Mid-America Intercollegiate Athletics Association (MIAA). Missouri Southern drops to 9-16 and 4-12 in MIAA action.
Freshman Lance Sullivan converted a layup and three-pointer on two consecutive Northwest possessions as part of seven unanswered points by the Bearcats early in the game. Henry provided the momentum, scoring nine consecutive points in a 9-1 Northwest run to help build a 25-14 lead with 8:39 remaining in the half.
The Bearcats shot an even 50-percent (17-of-34) from the field in the first half. The 17 Northwest field goals were one less than the total field goal attempts from the Lions (18) at the intermission.
The Lions were never able to pull within single digits throughout the second half, pulling as close as 10 with 15:15 remaining off a layup from Deonte Cox. Following Cox's layup, a jumper from junior forward Matt Withers sparked a 10-0 Northwest run to lift the Bearcats to a 53-33 lead with under 13 minutes left.
Henry led Northwest with 20 points, followed by Sullivan with 14. Withers and junior guard Andy Peterson tallied 11 to round out Bearcats in double digits.
The Lions were led by Cox with 20 points, with 12 coming off of free-throws. Tyler Ryerson also added 15 for Missouri Southern.
The Bearcats end the regular season road schedule at Missouri Western in St. Joseph, Mo. Tip off is set for 7:30 p.m. on Feb. 21.
NOTES: Henry marks his 21st straight game with 10 or more points, the most since Sky Wilson did so for 27 games in the 2002-03 season ... Northwest has won 14 of the last 15 games played against Missouri Southern at Bearcat Arena.
