Northwest Men Sweep Season Series With Truman After 64-50 Win
KIRKSVILLE, Mo. - Junior guard Andy Peterson scored 19 points to lead No. 13 Northwest Missouri State to a 64-50 win over Truman State at Pershing Arena tonight. Moving to No. 3 in the latest South Central Region poll announced today (Feb. 7), Northwest swept the season series over the Bulldogs after TSU did the sweep last year.
Northwest improves to 18-4 overall and 11-2 in the Mid-America Intercollegiate Athletics Association. Truman State drops to 13-9 and 7-6 in the MIAA.
Senior guard Reggie Robinson opened for Northwest with a layup 11 seconds into the game, but Truman answered back to take an 8-5 lead two minutes later. A jumper by Nick Certa provided a five-point cushion for the Bulldogs with 9:04 remaining in the half before sophomore Hunter Henry scored a layup to ignite a 10-2 Bearcat run and help provide a three-point Northwest lead with six minutes left in the half.
Lance Sullivan banked in a three-pointer to provide the first field goal for either team in over three minutes to lift Northwest to a 31-28 lead at the half.
Truman opened the second half with five unanswered points before Peterson drained a three-pointer at the 16:14 mark to spurn Northwest on a 19-3 run and build a 50-36 lead with 9:43 remaining.
"I really thought he really shot the ball well and made some plays defensively," said head coach Steve Tappmeyer on Peterson's night.
The Bulldogs pulled within seven with seven minutes remaining, but wouldn't be able to pull any closer throughout the rest of the game.
Henry recorded his 18th straight game with ten or more points, scoring 16 tonight. Junior forward Matt Withers also recorded 10 points to round out Bearcats in double figures. Peterson led Northwest with seven boards.
Banks Estridge led the Bulldogs with 18 points, with the Nick Certa and Austin Kirby contributing 12 apiece. Andy Calmes led both teams with 10 rebounds.
The Bearcats will be on the road again on Saturday as they travel to Pittsburg State. Tip-off is set for 3:30 p.m.
