Northwest MBB Ranked No. 8 in First Regional PollINDIANAPOLIS - The Northwest Missouri State men's basketball team sits No. 8 in the first installment of the 2006-07 South Central Region rankings, released late Wednesday. The rankings were compiled before Northwest's 89-72 victory at nationally-ranked No. 7 Emporia State on Wednesday.
The top eight teams in each of the eight regions advance to the NCAA Division II Tournament, which runs from March 10-11, 13 at the No. 1 seed. Central Missouri, who stands 17-0 on the year, tops off the list followed by Emporia State, who had its undefeated streak of 16 games halted by Northwest.
Five Lone Star Conference (LSC) schools are pegged from the No. 3 to No. 7 spots while Central Oklahoma (No. 9) and Truman State (No. 10) sandwich Northwest. Three conferences comprise the South Central Region: the Mid-America Intercollegiate Athletics Association (MIAA), the LSC and the Heartland Conference. There are no schools from the HC in this week's polls.
The Bearcats, ranked No. 19 in the national coaches' poll (Jan. 23), are 2-2 against currently-ranked South Central Region schools -- Northwest also defeated Metro State on Dec. 19, who is No. 4 in the North Central Region.
The regional rankings will be released weekly on Wednesdays through March 1, 2007.
"I am happy to be somewhere within striking distance," said head coach Steve Tappmeyer. "We got a tough stretch of ahead us but we are not too focused on this right now. It is nice to be up there and have something to work for to finish the season.
"It is good to see our two top MIAA teams at No. 1 and No. 2 -- we still have to play them again here. Some changes will definitely occur with these teams playing each other."
