Bearcats Suffer Second MIAA Defeat in 69-55 Loss to No. 3 Central Missouri

WARRENSBURG, Mo. - ( stats) Sophomore forward Hunter Henry notched his sixth double-double of the season, but it wouldn't be enough as No. 15 Northwest Missouri State men's basketball fell 69-55 to No. 3 Central Missouri at the UCM Multipurpose Building this afternoon.

The Bearcats fall to 13-4 and 6-2 in Mid-America Intercollegiate Athletics Association (MIAA) play. The Mules remain undefeated at 16-0 and 7-0 in MIAA action.

Central Missouri scored first off a jumper from Zack Wright before Northwest tallied eight unanswered points to take a 8-2 lead at the 16:54 mark. It would take the Bearcats over five minutes to record another field goal with junior forward Matt Withers sinking a layup at 11:42.

The Mules put together a 13-4 run to go ahead 29-21 with just over four minutes left in the period. The Bearcats were able to cut the difference to three, but entered the locker room trailing by five.

Central converted on 15-of-18 free throws in the first half off of 11 Northwest fouls. Sophomore forward Hunter Henry came within one of the double-double by halftime, tallying nine rebounds and 10 points by the intermission. Freshman guard Mike Larsen scored the only three-pointer for either team in the first half, as the Bearcats went 1-of-6 and the Mules 0-for-8 from behind the arc. Central Missouri also held a 23-to-13 advantage on the boards.

Central Missouri started the second half with a 10-4 run to build a nine-point lead four minutes into the period. Northwest answered back with a 9-3 run sparked by a jumper from freshman Lance Sullivan to allow the Bearcats to pull within three with 12:04 remaining in the game.

The Mules answered back with a 13-4 run after the Sullivan trey to take a 59-47 lead with 4:35 left in the game. Northwest would get back within 10 with a layup from Withers on the next possession, but the Bearcats were never able to get the deficit back into the single digits.

Henry ended the afternoon with 23 points and 11 rebounds to led all players. Withers scored a season-high 14 points as the only other Bearcat in double figures.

Four Mules reached double figures in scoring, led by Darryl Sommerset with 20. Theo Jones and Wadale Williams grabbed seven boards apiece for lead Central Missouri.

The Bearcats will see another top-10 opponent in a visit to No. 7 Emporia State on Jan. 24. Tip-off from White Auditorium is set for 7:30 p.m.
