Bearcats Drop First Conference Game in 59-57 Loss to Missouri Southern
JOPLIN, Mo.- ( stats) No. 11 Northwest Missouri State committed a season-high 25 turnovers in a 59-57 loss to Missouri Southern tonight at the Leggett and Platt Athletic Center in Joplin, Mo.
Northwest falls to 11-3 overall and suffers the first conference loss of the season in Mid-America Intercollegiate Athletics Association play to drop to 4-1. Missouri Southern improves to 6-8 and picked its first MIAA win to move to 1-4.
Northwest built a four-point lead five minutes into the first half off a jumper from redshirt freshman Lance Sullivan before Tyler Ryerson hit a three-pointer to spark a 8-0 Lions run lasting to the 10:31 mark. The Bearcats committed six turnovers in the time span, contributing to a season-high 13 first half turnovers.
Northwest trailed 28-27 at halftime with senior Reggie Robinson and junior Andy Peterson each contributing six. The Bearcats have trailed entering the half in all five MIAA games this season.
Both teams remained with four of each other throughout the first ten of minutes of the second period before an 11-4 Lion run midway through the half put Missouri Southern up 52-44 with just over eight minutes remaining.
Sullivan drained a three-pointer with 1:50 remaining in the game to cap a 10-2 Bearcat run and tie the score at 57-57. The Lions used a tip-in from Deonte Cox with 21 seconds remaining to allow Missouri Southern to capture the win 59-57.
Sophomore forward Hunter Henry led Northwest for the 11th time this season with 15 points - marking his 10th straight game with 10-plus points. Henry earned his fourth double-double this season with a game-leading 10 rebounds. Robinson added 12 points and Sullivan 11 to round out Bearcats scoring in double-digits.
Northwest will return to action on Jan. 13 to welcome Pittsburg State. Tip-off is set for 3:30 p.m at Bearcat Arena.
