SAN ANTONIO - ( stats ) The Northwest Missouri State men's basketball team lost a heartbreaker 72-70 today to Midwestern (Texas) State University at the River City Classic hosted by St. Mary's University. The loss snapped a four-game win streak and puts Northwest at 8-2 on the year. Midwestern improves to 6-3 on the campaign.
Senior guard Chad Rickett of Midwestern hit a 15-footer with 1.4 seconds left to give the Bearcats their second loss of the season. Northwest came out down from a 13-0 hole in the first five minutes of the ball game before cutting the deficit to five at half, 33-28. Northwest tied the game three times in the second half, but failed to lead the entire game.
Sophomore forward Hunter Henry scored nine points in the last two minutes of the game, hitting two 3-pointers and tying the game at 70 with 14 seconds left with a layup. Hunter was fouled on that layup but left the game with an apparent ankle injury. Senior Reggie Robinson missed the free throw that would have given the Bearcats the lead.
Hunter led all scorers with 28 points, a career-high, on 12-of-17 shooting. The only other Northwest player in double-digits was Lance Sullivan with 20 points, also a career-high. Junior Matt Withers topped the rebounding charts grabbing 13 to lead both teams.
Northwest committed only 11 turnovers to Midwestern State's 23. Northwest shot 34.8 (24-69) percent from the field, while allowing the Mustangs to shoot 51.1 (23-45) percent.
Midwestern State had four players with at least 10 points led by senior guard Drew Coffman with 22. Senior guard Chad Rickett had 19 on 7-of-11 shooting and hit the game-winning jumper with 1.4 seconds left. Senior center Eric Dawson and Coffman both had 10 rebounds.
Northwest will have eight days off before it takes on the Dream Builders in an exhibition game on Dec. 28 at 7 p.m. in Bearcat Arena.
