Bearcats Suffer First Defeat in 65-57 Loss to the University of Mary

ABERDEEN, S.D. - ( stats) The University of Mary (N.D.) built an 18-point lead early in the second half, but an 12-2 Northwest run late in the half wouldn't be enough as No. 18 Northwest Missouri State men's basketball fell 65-57 to the Marauders in the Super 8/Bob Wachs Classic this evening.

The loss is the first for the Bearcats this season, who fall to 4-1. The Marauders picked up their second win of the season to improve to 2-3.

Northwest was the first to score at the 18:08 mark with a jumper and follow-up free throw from sophomore forward Hunter Henry. It took the Bearcats six minutes to score again, allowing 11 unanswered points from the University of Mary in the span.

The Marauders took a 12-point lead with 5:16 remaining in the first period, but Northwest was able to cut it to within four at 1:21 from eight straight free throws. The University of Mary drained two treys in the final minute to enter halftime with a 33-23 lead.

The Bearcats were only able to connect on five of 24 shots from the field in the first half (20.8) against 11-of-27 from the University of Mary (40.7). Twelve of the 23 Northwest points at half came from free throws.

Northwest narrowed the lead down to six at 17:19 in the second half before the University of Mary strung together a 12-0 run and took an 18-point lead with 14:23 remaining in the game. The Bearcats answered back with a 10-0 run ignited by a pair of free throws from junior forward Matt Withers to pull within eight at the 11:15 mark.

Freshman Lance Sullivan made a jumper with two minutes remaining to bring the game within three. Northwest committed four fouls in an attempt to gain possession, but missed six of its next seven field goals while the Marauders went six of eight at the charity stripe.

Sullivan led the Bearcats with 12 points while senior guard Reggie Robinson pulled down seven rebounds. Both marks are career-highs for each. Henry also recorded a career-high three blocked shots.

Jordan Englehardt of the University of Mary led all players with 17 points. Zach Dorsh grabbed eight rebounds.

The Bearcats will return home on Dec. 2 to welcome Principia (Ill.) College to Bearcat Arena. Tip-off is scheduled for 7 p.m.
