Larsen and McFall Added to Men's Basketball for 2006-07
MARYVILLE, Mo. -- Two more players will join the Northwest Missouri State men's basketball team, announced head coach Steve Tappmeyer today. Freshman Mike Larsen, a guard from Salt Lake City, Utah, signed a Northwest scholarship and sophomore Clint McFall, a 6-2, guard from Olathe, Kan., signed an NCAA and Northwest National Letter of Intent.
As a prep at Juan Diego Catholic High School in Salt Lake City, Larsen earned First Team All-State 2A honors from the Salt Lake Tribune as a senior. He was the Region VIII MVP after scoring 14 points per game and dishing out 4.2 assists. As a junior, he was named to the All-Region XII First Team along with a mention on the Salt Lake Tribune All-State Second Team and 2A State Tournament squad. In addition, he was a two-time member of the Deseret News All-State Team.
A member of the Academic All-State team for hoops, Larsen was a part of a team to go 37-9 in his final two seasons. He was a two-year starter on the gridiron as a quarterback and free safety.
"Michael will be a positive contribution to our program," said Tappmeyer, who led his team to a Sweet 16 appearance in 2005-06 as the region's No. 5 seed. "He has tremendous upside and we believe he will continue to develop. He comes from an outstanding high school program where he is used to winning. We hope he brings that knack for success with him."
Entering next season as a sophomore, McFall spent 2005-06 at Coffeyville (Kan.) Community College. The team leader in 3-pointers, McFall shot 39 percent from beyond the arc as he started in 34 of 38 games. Coffeyville finished the season at 33-5, placed seventh in NAIA ranks and won the Jayhawk Eastern Conference Championship.
During his high school career at Olathe South, McFall was selected to play in the Kansas Basketball Coaches Association All-Star game and the Greater Kansas City Basketball Coaches Association All-Star game. As a senior, he led the team in scoring at 16.3 per game and in overall assists. A Honor Roll student, McCall was named to the all-state second team, all-metro second team, All-Johnson County First Team and All-Sunflower League First Team. Olathe South went 63-8 in his three years of varsity basketball, won two league crowns and was 6A state champions in 2004.
"Clint is a special player and outstanding young man," said Tappmeyer. "He has a lot of experience playing at highly competitive levels. We anticipate he will make positive contributions to the Bearcat program."
Larsen and McFall join junior college transfer John Hawkins (Independence, Mo.) as the three signed to play for the 2006-07 season.
Northwest begins the 2006-07 season with a home date on Nov. 17 against Upper Iowa at 7:30 p.m.
