Hawkins Signs as 1st Member of 2006-07 Recruiting Class
MARYVILLE, Mo. -- Northwest Missouri State head men's basketball coach Steve Tappmeyer announced the signing of John Hawkins (Independence, Mo.) to a Northwest and NCAA National Letter of Intent today. Hawkins is a transfer from North Central Missouri College in Trenton, Mo. Listed as a 6-0, 200 lb. guard, Hawkins will enter 2006-07 as a junior.
"We are excited to have John as a member of our program," said Tappmeyer, who took his club as the eighth seed in the region to the Sweet 16 this past season. "We believe he is a great fit as a player, a student, and a person for Bearcat basketball. We have high expectations that he will contribute to the success of Northwest."
Playing for head coach Steve Richman, Hawkins averaged 11.5 points and 2.5 steals per contest as a sophomore at North Central. A team captain, Hawkins was selected to the National Junior College Athletic Association (NJCAA) All-Region XVI Team. He played shooting guard and point guard for the 17-14 Pirates.
As a prep at Fort Osage High School under coach Roger Hunt, Hawkins put in averages of 7.5 points and 3.0 steals. He was recognized on the all-conference team as a junior and listed as the team captain that same season. During the 2003 season, he was named the top prospect by kchoopscoop.com.
NCMC assistant coach Richard Woods is a graduate of Northwest Missouri State and played in the 1960s.
"John is a great kid, not only in his basketball ability, but in character," said NCMS head coach Steve Richman. "He has tremendous attitude and there is never a negative with the kid. On the basketball court, he is full intensity for 40 minutes and finds a way to win."
Northwest begins the 2006-07 season with a home date on Nov. 17 against Upper Iowa at 7:30 p.m.
