OVERLAND PARK, Kan. - Northwest Missouri State men's basketball senior guard Xzavier Gaines (Grandberry, Tex.) was named the Mid-America Intercollegiate Athletics Association (MIAA) Player of the Week, announced this afternoon from the league offices. Gaines is the first such Bearcat since Kelvin Parker on March 9, 2004 was recognized.
"The biggest thing was his honor was part of two wins," said head coach Steve Tappmeyer. "Playing with an injury (eye) and playing the way he did really gave us a lift against Emporia. We are happy for him in earning this honor."
In the two Northwest wins last week, Gaines posted averages of 23 points, 7 rebounds, 1.5 assists and 1.0 blocks. The transfer from Syracuse University shot 48.5 percent (16-of-33) from the field and hit four treys.
His 31 points in the double overtime 108-101 win last Wednesday was a career-best and he notched five straight points in the second extra frame to help hand Emporia its fifth straight loss on the season. Gaines hit two triples, part of a season-high 17 three's for Northwest, during a 31-14 run late in regulation to help the Bearcats come back from a 14-point hole. In the 76-64 win over Missouri Southern on Saturday, Gaines reached double figures for the ninth straight game with 15.
He now stands tops on the team with 13.8 points per game, which ranks ninth in the league. Also, he is second on the club in rebounding (4.7), three-pointers (45) and third with 28 steals.
Northwest hits the road for a battle with Missouri Western on Wednesday, Feb. 15. Tip-off is set for 7:30 p.m. The Northwest ticket office is selling tickets on campus at (660) 562-1212.
