Bearcats Down Missouri Southern 76-64

MARYVILLE, Mo. - ( box score ) Northwest Missouri State men's basketball led from wire-to-wire and shot 49 percent in a 76-64 win over Missouri Southern this afternoon in MIAA action from Bearcat Arena. Missouri Southern did not make a basket until the 15:17 mark and never recovered as Northwest held a 8-2 edge at that point.

Northwest moves to 17-7 overall and 8-5 in the league while Missouri Southern falls to 11-13 and 4-9 in conference action.

A 3-pointer from senior Addae Houston handed Northwest its biggest lead of the game at 33-17 with four minutes remaining in the first half. That basket capped a 21-10 run and the Northwest advantage never shrunk under seven points the rest of the game. During one point of the first stanza, MSSU went without a basket for nearly six minutes as the Bearcats expanded their lead from nine to 16.

The Lions shot just 33 percent (8-of-24) in the first half and turned the ball over nine times. Northwest held a 35-24 edge at intermission.

Missouri Southern dwindled the Bearcat lead to 62-55 on a Dan Jones lay-up at the 3:38 mark, but Houston's third triple pushed the Northwest lead back to double digits. Northwest hit its free throws down the stretch and the Bearcats won for the 12th time in 13 home games against Missouri Southern.

Northwest finished 10-of-25 (.400) from downtown thanks to four treys from junior Mose Howard. Howard led the Bearcats with 21 points, one game removed from netting a career-best 23 at Emporia State. Senior Xzavier Gaines and junior R eggie Robinson each hit for 15 points apiece. Gaines tied with sophomore Matt Withers for rebounding honors with six apiece.

The Lions shot just 40 percent (21-of-53), including 5-of-20 (.250) from three-point range. MSSU went 17-of-24 (.708) from the foul line and held a 38-29 rebounding advantage. Jeremie Bond complimented Edwards' scoring with 12 points.

Northwest hits the road for a battle with Missouri Western on Wednesday, Feb. 15. Tip-off is set for 7:30 p.m. The Northwest ticket office is selling tickets on campus at (660) 562-1212.

NOTES: Northwest improves in the all-time series with Missouri Southern, 20-10 ... The Bearcats have been out-rebounded in six straight games by an average margin of -12.3 ... The 15 points from Reggie Robinson is the most since going for a career-best 21 against Texas A&M-Kingsville (Dec. 16) ... In all 24 games this season, Northwest has never turned the ball over more than the opponent - MSSU had 15 turnovers this afternoon with Northwest at 10 ... The last time Northwest and Missouri Southern met, the Bearcats squeaked out a 52-50 win on Jan. 14 shooting just 31 percent ... Mose Howard has now led the team in scoring nine times after his 21-point effort and is tied with Xzavier Gaines for tops on the club.
