Northwest Falls 64-42 To Pittsburg State
PITTSBURG, Kan. - (box score) Pittsburg State used a 15-0 run at the beginning of the second half to defeat the Northwest Missouri State men's basketball team 64-42 in John Lance Arena. The 42 points is the fewest scored by Northwest since Jan. 28, 1996, when they were defeated 42-47 by Emporia State.
The Bearcats opened with 5-0 lead in the first half, sparked by a layup by Matt Withers 12 seconds into the game. A 3-point field goal by Pittsburg State's Marcus Madison at 9:42 sparked an 8-0 run by the Gorillas, who gained momentum to led Northwest 27-23 at halftime.
Pitt State continued its momentum in the second half, going on a 15-0 run for nearly five minutes, that gave the Gorillas the 45-26 lead.
The Bearcats got the lead down to 13 at 7:16, but failed to hit another field goal for five minutes. Northwest scored its final points on another bunny by Withers.
Xzavier Gaines and Mose Howard each scored 11 points to lead Northwest in scoring, while Gaines recorded a team-high five rebounds.
Northwest was plagued by 29 percent shooting from the field (14-48) and 56 percent shooting form the charity stripe. The 14 field goals represented the fewest made by Northwest in any game this season.
After shooting 33 percent from the field in the first half, Pittsburg State shot 54 percent on 13-of-24 shooting, led by Jackson's game-high 20 points. Carlos Morris recorded a double-double by grabbing 14 rebounds and scoring 16 points. Taylor also contributed to the Gorilla cause with 17.
Northwest, losing its fourth straight game for the first time since the 1996-97 season, falls to 15-7 overall and 6-5 in the Mid-America Intercollegiate Athletics Association.
Pittsburg State, the last place team in the MIAA before today's game, improves to 7-14 overall and 3-7 in the conference.
Northwest Missouri State will be back on the road Wednesday, as it travels to Emporia State, tip-off is scheduled for 7:30 p.m.
