Northwest Men Go 3-0 in Texas

SAN ANTONIO, Tex. - The Northwest Missouri State men's basketball team went 3-0 on the trip to Texas, with the third victory coming tonight over St. Mary's University 60-54.

In the first half, Northwest and St. Mary's went back and forth with neither team shooting the ball well. The Bearcats shot only 34 percent from the field, while St. Mary's did only slightly better shooting 35 percent.

Northwest went nine-of-26 from the field, while only allowing the Rattlers to go six-of-17. The Bearcats were led by senior Xzavier Gaines (Grandberry, Tex.) at the break as he scored six points.

The Bearcats did not make a trip to the free throw line in the first stanza, but did manage to hold St. Mary's to free throws for nearly the last six minutes of the half. Nine of SMU's 22 points came from the charity stripe.

SMU also cleared the boards, as it grabbed 14 defensive and four offensive rebounds including one on a missed free throw. The offensive rebound on the free throw attempt allowed the Rattlers to get to four points. Northwest however was only able to grab 10 total rebounds in the first half, with three offensive and seven defensive boards.

In the second half, Northwest took two less shots from the field, but still shot 37 percent from the field.

For the game the Bearcats went seven-of-20 from three point range, 18-of-50 from the field and 17-of-21 from the free throw line. Northwest also pulled down 13 rebounds in the second half, with five offensive and eight defensive rebounds to gain 23 total for the game.

The Bearcats were led by Gaines who had a team high 16 points along with, junior Mose Howard (Omaha, Neb.), who had 12 and sophomore Andy Peterson (Trenton, Mo.) who chipped in with 10.

The Bearcats will now take eight days off before they get back to action on Dec. 28 in an exhibition game against Dreambuilders. Then on New Year's Eve, Northwest will open up MIAA action against Central Missouri State.

Northwest is now 9-2 on the year and on its second longest winning streak of the season, while St. Mary's moves to 4-6.
