Northwest Wins 64-51 Over SE Oklahoma

TOPEKA, Kan. - ( box score) Northwest Missouri State senior guard Xzavier Gaines netted a career-high 21 points with five three's to lead the men's basketball team to a 64-51 win over Southeastern Oklahoma State tonight at the Premiere Mortgage / WIBW Radio Holiday Classic hosted by Washburn University.

Northwest improves to 4-1 overall while Southeastern Oklahoma drops to 1-1 on the year.

Senior Austin Meyer staked Northwest to a quick 6-0 lead as the Bearcats went up 12-2 in the first four minutes. Northwest scored on four of its first five three point attempts before a tip-in from Meyer gave his club a 17-7 edge. After falling down 26-12 at the 6:44 mark, Southeastern Oklahoma went on a 15-4 run to close out the first half. The Savages trailed 30-27 at the break.

Meyer already had 10 points at the half. Northwest held a 20-12 rebounding edge as well.

Coming to within 28-30 after the half, the Savages went cold totaling just four points during a six-minute stretch. During that cold streak for SOSU, Northwest led 48-32 after two free throws by sophomore Andy Peterson capped an 18-4 spurt. Gaines found his outside stroke connecting on three trifectas in the final 20 minutes to post 13 second-half points.

After getting behind by 16, SOSU was unable to cut the margin to less than 13 points the rest of the way.

Meyer finished with 16 points and seven rebounds. Peterson chipped in nine points and four boards.

SOSU was led by the 21 points from Jason Stampley as he was just eight-of-17 from the court. Eric Babers corralled a game-high eight caroms and came away with 10 points.

After going 15-of-65 (.231) from three-point range in the three previous games, Northwest was 10-of-20 (.500) tonight from deep. The Bearcats shot 43.5 percent (20-of-46) overall while Southeastern Oklahoma was 20-of-48 (.417). Northwest finished with a slight 31-27 rebounding advantage.

Northwest battles Sterling (Kan.) tomorrow at 5:30 p.m. in day two of the Washburn Classic.

NOTES: Northwest moves to 7-0 all-time (available archives) against Southeastern Oklahoma … With his two three-pointers, Austin Meyer is one away from the career mark of 173 set by Scott Fleming (2000-03) … The Bearcats went with their third different starting lineup in their last three games tonight - last season, Northwest put out 15 different starting rotations … Meyer has scored in double-digits in four of his five games this season … The team's third leading scorer coming into the game at 9.5 points per game, Matt Withers, was held scoreless as he was saddled with foul trouble … The Northwest bench outscored the SOSU reserves 20-0 tonight … In the last three games, the Bearcats hold a 32-10 scoring edge from the free throw line.
