Northwest Forces 30 Turnovers in 77-42 Win

MARYVILLE, Mo. - ( box score) The Northwest Missouri State defense forced 30 turnovers as Northwest rolled to a 77-42 non-conference win against Graceland (Iowa) tonight at Bearcat Arena. The win was the 47th straight at Bearcat Arena against non-league competition.

Northwest moves to 3-1 on the season while Graceland falls to 1-5 overall.

The Graceland Yellowjackets hit four three-pointers in the first eight minutes and held a 18-16 lead with 11:05 left. However, the guests would only score two points during a six-plus minute stretch as the Bearcats took a 35-21 lead with five minutes remaining in the first half. Senior Austin Meyer scored 10 of his game-high 14 points in the first 20 minutes.

Holding a 41-29 lead at the break, Northwest limited the guests to just two points for a 10:20 stretch to open up the second half. At that point, the Bearcats were up 60-31 and limited Graceland to 27 percent shooting in the second stanza.

Four Bearcats hit double figures led by Meyer's 14, while junior Mose Howard and senior Xzavier Gaines each had 11 and sophomore Andy Peterson finished with 10 and seven boards. Sophomore Matt Withers finished with six points, a career-high six assists and four steals. In his second game of the year, junior Ed Hudson grabbed a game-best nine rebounds in 16 minutes.

Northwest was dominant on the glass as it held a 43-20 edge including 20 offensive rebounds. Also, the Bearcats totaled 21 steals.

Graceland was led by Wendell Smith, who finished with 13 points but had six turnovers.

The Bearcats play at the Premiere Mortgage / WIBW Holiday Classic hosted by Washburn this weekend. On Friday, Northwest takes on Southeastern Oklahoma State followed by Sterling (Kan.) on Saturday. Both games tip at 5:30 p.m.

NOTES: Northwest moves to 68-16 in the month of November under coach Steve Tappmeyer (since 1988-89) ... In the last three games, Northwest has shot just 15-of-65 (.231) from behind the arc ... Austin Meyer is just three three-pointers away from the career-best mark of 173 set by Scott Fleming (2000-03) ... The Bearcats have won the last four meetings against Graceland.
