Northwest Defeats Emporia, 76-71

EMPORIA, Ks . - Northwest Missouri State stopped Emporia State in the final seconds of the game as the Bearcats claimed the 76-71 victory ending the Hornets' three-game winning streak. The 'Cats went on 16-0 run only to be met by a 14-0 run by Emporia in the second half. The Bearcats' 25 point lead shrunk to a three point lead with only seven seconds left in the game. Free throws by Jesse Shaw extended the final advantage to five points.

Northwest improved to 16-7 overall and 6-6 in the MIAA while the Hornets fell to 14-7 overall and 6-6 in conference play.

Northwest went on a 16-0 run to finish out the first half 33-19. The 'Cats out-rebounded the Hornets 22-12 before the 20-minute mark. Both teams turned the ball over four times and had one steal each. Emporia's last basket in the first half was with 6:50 left on the clock. The Hornets made only seven field goals and two free throws.

Joel Osborn led the Bearcats' scoring campaign with 11 points and Byron Jackson owned the boards with seven rebounds.

The Bearcats extended their lead to 25 points with 7:26 left in the game. A three-pointer by Osborn, with less than five minutes left, put the 'Cats up 67-45. The Hornets then scored 14 unanswered points to shorten the deficit to eight points at 67-59. Osborn's free throws put the 'Cats back on the scoring track. Northwest made 12 free throws in the last six minutes.

The 'Cats made 42.1 percent of their shots from the field (24-57) and 21.4 percent from three-point range, their lowest percentage this season from beyond the arc. Northwest turned the ball over 16 times and grabbed 4 steals while Emporia had only 11 turnovers and took seven steals. Northwest grabbed 46 boards led by Jackson's 11 rebounds.

Osborn continued his scoring trend throughout the game ending with 19 points shared with Shaw's 19 points.

Tyrell Sledge scored a career-high 30 points tonight for the Hornets. Deshawn Anderson added 15 for Emporia.

Northwest will continue on the road next week with a game at Truman State on Wed., Feb. 9 at 7:30 p.m.
