'Cats Slip By Dreambuilders 87-83 in Exhibition

MARYVILLE, Mo. -- Northwest Missouri State used a 21-8 run over 9:49 in the second half coming back from a six-point deficit to escape with a 87-83 exhibition victory over Dreambuilders in men's basketball action tonight at Bearcat Arena.

Northwest did not trail the entire first half taking leads of eight points at the 15:47 mark and increasing that cushion to 10 with 6:55 remaining in the first stanza. The Bearcats held a 36-33 edge at the half despite the guests closing out with a 11-5 run in the final 5:43 to come within three points.

Four straight points by Dreambuilder's Tyler Peterson to open up the second half gave his club a 37-36 lead, its first of the contest. From there, Brandon Jones took over. During a 3:00 stretch, Jones converted 14 straight points for the visitors giving Dreambuilders a 49-45 advantage. He connected on two of his game-tying three treys during that stretch.

Dreambuilders went up by as much as 64-58 after a Peterson layup with 10:13 remaining but a three-pointer by senior Travis Gardner began the Northwest comeback. The 'Cats received excellent free throw shooting as the team went 12-of-12 in the final 3:05 to seal the win. Junior Austin Meyer led the way with a six-of-six effort.

For the game, Meyer finished with a team-high 19 points on five-of-12 shooting. Senior Sky Wilson added 18 points and seven assists - he hit 10-of-12 from the charity stripe. Senior Jesse Shaw came away with 10 points while senior Byron Jackson led 'Cat rebounders with eight caroms and chipped in nine points. Sophomore Brandon Maxie posted nine points and freshman Joel Osborn came off the bench to contribue nine points, all coming of the three-point variety.

Dreambuilders had three players in double figures with Jones leading the way with a game-high 23 points on 10-of-24 shooting. Nate Johnson was next with 16 points, six assists and six rebounds while Peterson had 12 points and eight boards.

Northwest held a slight shooting advantage (44-43%) from the field and outscored Dreambuilders 23-14 from the foul line. There were a combined 23 treys between the two clubs.

Northwest begins MIAA play with a visit to Southwest Baptist on Thursday, Dec. 30. The Bearcats are riding a 12-game winning streak over SBU in the series.
