'Cats Ranked No. 23 in First NABC Coaches Poll

KANSAS CITY, Mo. -- The Northwest Missouri State men's basketball program was tabbed No. 23 in the first 2004-05 regular season poll released by the National Association of Basketball Coaches (NABC) yesterday. The Bearcats sit at 5-1 entering play this week after a 65-48 setback at No. 24 Central Arkansas last Saturday. The next poll is scheduled to be released Monday, Dec. 6.

Overall, Northwest has now been mentioned 73 times in the national polls with 35 top-10 selections. Currently, the 'Cats have held a slot on the national list for the last 12 straight weeks.

Fellow league members Washburn and Emporia State hold down the No. 3 and 21 spots.

Virginia Union (4-0) was selected as the top team in the country. The Panthers received five of a possible eight first-place votes. Rollins (Fla.) and Southern Indiana, the program that knocked the 'Cats out of the Elite 8 last season and went on to win the Division II National Championship, come in at No. 2 and 3.

Northwest, who is ranked No. 12 on the Division II Bulletin Preseason Rankings (Oct. 20), hosts Haskell Indian Nations University tonight (Wednesday) at Bearcat Arena with game-time scheduled for 7:00 p.m. Following Haskell, the Bearcats welcome Central Bible College Monday, Dec. 6 at 7:00 p.m.
