First Loss of the Season Comes at the Hands of Central Arkansas, 65-48CONWAY, Ark. -- No. 12 Northwest Missouri State men's basketball was held to 33 percent shooting (16-of-48) and lost the battle of the boards, 36-19 in the 65-48 loss to host school Central Arkansas in the Alltell Classic this evening. The loss is the first of the year for Northwest as it stands now at 5-1. Meanwhile, UCA remains undefeated at 5-0.
After the hosts rattled off 10 straight points to take a 24-11 lead in the middle of the first half, senior guard Sky Wilson nailed one of his three treys to bring Northwest within 24-20 with 4:29 remaining. That was as close as the Bearcats would come.
Central Arkansas, which held a 30-22 edge at the half, went on a 13-4 run in the final four-plus minutes in the first half and 2:12 of the second half to increase its margin to 13 at 37-24. From there, the 'Cats could not get the deficit under 10 points.
Wilson led all scorers with 19 points and sophomore Josh Vanderslice added 11 points. Senior Jesse Shaw, who came into the game averaging 17.2 points per game, was held scoreless on 0-for-five shooting.
The Bears received balanced scoring with four players in double-figures as Chris Grey had 15 points and Lee Reliford came away with 14 points and 11 rebounds. Central Arkansas shot the ball well at a 57 percent (25-of-44) clip.
Northwest returns home for a 7 p.m. non-conference contest versus Haskell College on Wednesday, Dec. 1 at Bearcat Arena
