Northwest Improves to 5-0 With 72-55 Win vs. Ouachita Baptist
CONWAY, Ark. -- In the Alltell Classic hosted by Central Arkansas, No. 12 Northwest Missouri State men's basketball limited Ouachita Baptist (Ark.) to 31 percent shooting from the floor, including an 0-for-18 clip from three-point range, in the 72-55 victory this evening. The Tigers went just four-of-28 (.143) from the field in the first half and trailed 33-18 after the first 20 minutes.
Senior guard Sky Wilson (Indio, Calif.), in his first appearance of the season after sitting out the first four games with a concussion, finished with 13 points and a game-high six assists in a game-best 38 minutes. Junior forward Austin Meyer (Blue Springs, Mo.) came away with his third double-double of his career and second of 2004-05.
The Bearcats, who have now won their last seven games in tournament setting, improve to 5-0 overall while Ouachita Baptist fell to 2-2.
Senior forward Jesse Shaw (Lincoln, Neb.) scored a team-high 18 points connecting on three-of-three from long range. He added eight rebounds and two steals.
The Bearcats owned a 27-17 free-throw scoring advantage and outscored the Tigers by 21 points from beyond the arc.
Overall, Northwest shot 46 percent (19-of-41) on the game and 77 percent (27-of-35) from the charity stripe.
Ouachita was led in scoring by the 22 of David Mercer as he was nine-of-14 from the floor. Kennis Green chipped in 10 points while Travis Williams posted eight points and team-high seven caroms.
Northwest, who has gone 5-0 to open a season in six of the last seven years, faces off against host school Central Arkansas at 8 p.m. tomorrow (Saturday) evening.
NOTES: The 'Cats now improve to 2-0 overall against Ouachita Baptist - before tonight, Northwest was the victor in the 72-62 game during the 1989-90 season...Northwest has outscored its opposition 90-49 from the free throw line this season...Four of the five opponents have been held under 37 percent shooting after Ouachita Baptist finished at 31 percent...The Bearcats, who held a +10.3 rebounding margin entering tonight, have out-rebounded their opponent in all five games this year....Three Bearcats have hit for double-doubles on the season with Austin Meyer scoring two.
