Vorderbruegge Promoted to Associate Head CoachMARYVILLE, Mo. -- The Northwest Missouri State University men's basketball program and head coach Steve Tappmeyer announced the promotion of assistant Darren Vorderbruegge to associate head coach today. For the past four seasons, Vorderbruegge was the Bearcat full-time assistant coach.
"Vorderbruegge means a lot to this program," said head coach Steve Tappmeyer. "He has a tremendous amount of responsibilities and he is very deserving of this promotion."
Vorderbruegge has 13 years of high-school coaching experience. He came to Northwest Missouri State after four seasons as the head coach at Wichita (Kan.) Northwest High School. He guided Wichita Northwest to an 18-7 mark in 1999-2000 and a fourth-place finish in the Kansas 6A State Championships. His 1998-99 squad tied for fifth in Kansas 6A.
Vorderbruegge also served as an assistant at Wichita Northwest for three seasons.
He was the head coach at Hoisington (Kan.) High School from 1989-93. He also served as an assistant coach at West Elk High School Vorderbruegge is a graduate of Bethany College, where he was an All-America performer in track and field. He was also a student assistant basketball coach at Bethany.
Northwest, who is No. 12 in the 2004-05 Division II Bulletin Pre-Season Rankings, opens 2004-05 play with an exhibition contest at the University of Missouri-Columbia, Nov. 10 at 7:00 p.m. The first home matches are set for Nov. 16 and Nov. 17 at 7:00 p.m. with the 29th annual Ryland Milner Classic to follow Nov. 19-20.
The Bearcats are fresh off a 29-5 NCAA Division II Elite 8 Appearance last season - their fifth straight trip to the NCAA playoffs. Northwest ended the 2003-04 regular season polls with a No. 15 ranking.
