No. 7 Northwest Puts Dogs Out, 73-52
MARYVILLE, Mo. - The No. 7-ranked Northwest Missouri State University men's basketball team picked up its 20th win, topping Truman State 73-52 Wednesday night at Bearcat Arena.
Northwest fell behind 8-2 in the first four minutes, as Truman converted four of its first five field-goal attempts. The Bulldogs remained hot over the next six minutes and built their advantage. Back-to-back Matt Brock three-pointers gave Truman a 21-12 lead midway through the first half.
The Bearcats chipped away at their deficit. Three-pointers by Kelvin Parker (Sr., Raytown, Mo.) and Keanan Weir (Sr., Detroit, Mich.) pulled Northwest within three, 25-22. The Truman lead was still three, 27-27 with 5:55 to go in the first period. Then, both teams ran into a full-fledged scoring drought.
Neither team scored for nearly four minutes. Byron Jackson (Jr., Phoenix, Ariz.) ended the scoreless streak with a jumper at the 2:12 mark, getting the 'Cats back within one, 27-26. Northwest took its first lead 40 seconds later on a Travis Gardner (Jr., Minneapolis, Minn.) jumper. The Jackson and Gardner buckets sparked an 11-0 spurt to end the first half. The 'Cats headed to the locker room with a six-point lead, 33-27.
Northwest continued to build its lead in the early going of the second half. A Jesse Shaw (Jr., Lincoln, Neb.) three-pointer gave the 'Cats a nine-point lead at the 17-minute mark. Shaw converted a three-point play the old-fashioned way less than two minutes later to make it a 13-point game. Another Shaw bucket with 14:25 remaining made it 46-31. Shaw scored eight of Northwest's 13 points over the first 5:35 of the second half as the Bearcats took control.
During a period of 11:30, including the last 5:55 of the first half and the first 5:35 of the second, Northwest outscored Truman 22-4. The Bearcats pushed their advantage to 20 when Jackson scored with nine minutes to play. Weir hit a three-pointer less than a minute later to give Northwest a 62-39 lead. The Bearcats led by as many as 24, when Victor James (Fr., Crowley, Texas) scored in the paint with 4:18 remaining.
Jackson led Northwest with a team-high 12 points and a game-high eight rebounds. Four other Bearcats reached double figures. Gardner, Austin Meyer (Soph., Blue Springs, Mo.) and Shaw all scored 11. James tacked on 10. Matt Beran scored eight of his game-high 14 points in the first 11 minutes of the contest for Truman. He was the only Bulldog in double figures.
