No. 2 Bearcats Roll Over Southwest Baptist, 81-61

BOLIVAR, Mo. - Three Northwest Missouri State players scored in double figures Saturday afternoon at Davison Fieldhouse, leading the No. 2-ranked Northwest Bearcats over the Southwest Baptist Bearcats , 81-61.

Northwest's Kelvin Parker (Sr., Raytown, Mo.) scored 17 of his game-high 25 points in the second half. Austin Meyer (Soph., Blue Springs, Mo.) hit eight of his first 10 shots en route to 22 points. Jesse Shaw (Jr., Lincoln, Neb.) was six-for-six from the field, including three three-pointers, and scored 17.

Northwest blew the game open in the second half. After leading 33-27 at halftime, Northwest opened the second half on a 9-2 run, sparked by a Meyer three-pointer. Northwest led 42-29 when Parker hit a jumper at the 17:06 mark.

Southwest Baptist would spend the rest of the contest trying to trim the deficit to single digits. SBU finally succeeded, pulling within eight points with eight minutes left in the game. The purple Bearcats got a pair of three-pointers from Jarrett Brown, sparking a 15-6 spurt which left Northwest on top 60-52.

But that's as close as Southwest Baptist would get. Shaw answered the SBU run with a 12-3 outburst of his own. The Northwest forward hit two three-opinters, a pair of free throws, a layup and a jumper, all in a span of 3:30. Shaw's offensive display left Northwest with a 72-55 lead and just more than four minutes to play.

Northwest cruised from there, hitting seven-of-eight from the free-throw line.

In addition to the trio of double figure scorers, Northwest had some other impressive performances. Center Joe Principe (Sr., Kansas City, Mo.) dished out four assists in 20 minutes of action. Center Byron Jackson (Jr., Phoenix, Ariz.) pulled down a game-high eight rebounds. For the contest, Northwest shot 54 percent from the field.
