No. 4 Bearcats Pull Away From Mo. Southern, 72-55
MARYVILLE, Mo. -- No. 4 Northwest Missouri State pulled away from Missouri Southern State University early in the second half Saturday afternoon at Bearcat Arena. The Bearcats used that momentum to cruise to a 72-55 MIAA victory over the Lions and move to 13-0 overall and 4-0 in league play.
Northwest led 33-25 at halftime, but the Bearcats took control over the first 10 minutes of the second half. With Northwest on top 35-29, Victor James (Fr., Crowley, Texas) hit a jumper, followed bya Kelvin Parker (Sr., Raytown, Mo.) three-pointer. With 17:03 left in the game, the 'Cats led 40-29.
Five minutes later, an 11-2 run, capped by a layup on a beautiful back-door move from Travis Gardner (Jr., Minneapolis, Minn.) put Northwest up by 20 points, 51-31. The Bearcats continued to pour it on. Sky Wilson (Jr., Indio, Calif.) converted a conventional three-point play off a fast break and a nice pass from Jesse Shaw (Jr., Lincoln, Neb.). That three-point play gave Northwest a 25-point lead with 9:43 remaining in the game.
All tolled, Northwest outscored Missouri Southern 25-8 over the first 10:13 of the second half to grab control of the contest. The Bearcats maintained an advantage of more than 20 points for much of the remainder of the contest. The Lions pulled back within 17 on six straight meaningless points over the final two minutes.
Parker scored 10 points in the first half for Northwest, while James added seven. The Bearcats forced 11 turnovers in the first half and gave the ball away just four times in the first half. For the game, Northwest won the turnover battle 17-9. The 'Cats outscored Missouri Southern 20-6 off turnovers.
