No. 4 'Cats Win Exhibition Contest, 89-63
MARYVILLE , Mo. -- No. 4 Northwest Missouri State picked up an 89-63 victory over the Dream Builders in exhibition play Sunday afternoon at Bearcat Arena.
Travis Gardner (Jr., Minneapolis, Minn.) came off the bench to lead Northwest with 17 points. Gardner scored 15 of those points off five three-pointers. Four other Bearcats scored in double figures. Victor James (Fr., Crowley, Texas) scored 16, while Austin Meyer (Soph., Blue Springs, Mo.) and Kelvin Parker (Sr., Raytown, Mo.) added 13. Sky Wilson (Jr., Indio, Calif.) tacked on 12.
Northwest trailed 5-0 after two early turnovers. The 'Cats quickly regained control. Northwest took a 9-7 lead when Meyer hit a three-pointer just more than four minutes into the contest. David Newman answered with a three for Dream Builders to put the visitors on top 10-9.
But a James basket and Gardner's first trey gave Northwest a 14-10 advantage with 13:52 remaining in the first half. Those two scores sparked a 10-0 Northwest spurt, which left the 'Cats on top 19-10. Back-to-back three-pointers from Parker and Gardner gave Northwest a 30-14 advantage midway through the first half.
Meyer converted an old-fashioned three-point play with six minutes left in the first half to give Northwest a 20-point lead, 36-16. The Bearcats shot just better than 58 percent in the first half, en route to a 47-26 halftime advantage.
Northwest outscored Dream Builders 42-37 in the second half and cruised to the 26-point victory.
The Bearcats will open MIAA play Tuesday, hosting Southwest Baptist. Tipoff is slated for 7:30 p.m., following the Bearcat women's contest with Southwest Baptist.
