Northwest Wins Rock U Classic, Tops Hawks 91-77

KANSAS CITY , Mo. - No. 16-ranked Northwest Missouri State University won the Rock U Classic with a 91-77 victory over Rockhurst University Saturday afternoon at Mason-Halpin Field House. The Bearcats shot a sizzling 67.3 percent from the field and six 'Cats scored in double figures.

Northwest scored the first eight points of the contest. Kelvin Parker (Sr., Raytown, Mo.) and Sky Wilson (Jr., Indio, Calif.) hit three-pointers, sandwiched around an Austin Meyer (Soph., Blue Springs, Mo.) layup. The Bearcats never trailed in the contest. However, Rockhurst didn't let Northwest run away and hide, either.

The 'Cats built their advantage to as many as 12 points, when Byron Jackson (Jr., Phoenix, Ariz.) hit a pair of free throws with 7:51 remaining in the first half to make the score 24-12. But Rockhurst outscored Northwest 26-16 over the next seven minutes, pulling back within a bucket, 40-38. The 'Cats got a three-pointer from Bilal Clarance (Jr., Copenhagen, Denmark) and a lay-in from Jesse Shaw (Jr., Lincoln, Neb.) off a Clarance assist just before the halftime buzzer to take a seven-point lead, 45-38, at the intermission.

Northwest built a double-digit lead again early in the second half. A Wilson three-pointer 2:30 into the second half put the 'Cats up 52-42. But Rockhurst got a quick five points from Parker McKee and Terrance Dopson to pull back within five, 52-47. Vivien Fongue scored with seven minutes left for Rockhurst, holding the Hawks close, 69-62.

Keanan Weir (Sr., Detroit, Mich.) then hit a pair of three-pointers to spark a 10-2 Northwest spurt. With 4:22 remaining, the 'Cats led by 15, 79-64. Rockhurst would never get closer than 11 again. The Bearcats cruised to the 14-point victory, scoring layups and hitting free throws against a gambling Rockhurst defense.

Parker led the way with a game-high 18 points. He also dished out five assists and pulled down six rebounds. Jackson recorded a double-double for the 'Cats, scoring 12 points and grabbing 10 rebounds. Meyer added 14 points, while Shaw and Clarance each tallied 13. Wilson scored 11 to go along with his six assists.

Joel Sobanski scored 18 points to lead four Rockhurst players in double figures. Fongue pulled down seven rebounds to lead the Hawks, who fell to 2-5, on the boards.

The Bearcats, now 5-0, will host Central Bible College Dec. 6 at Bearcat Arena. Tipoff for Northwest's final non-conference home game is slated for 3:30 p.m.
