Northwest Rolls Over Park University, 83-60

KANSAS CITY , Mo. - No. 16-ranked Northwest Missouri State University defeated Park University 83-60 Friday afternoon at the Rockhurst University Classic. Kelvin Parker (Sr., Raytown, Mo.) and Austin Meyer (Soph., Blue Springs, Mo.) each scored 21 points to lead the Bearcats.

Northwest trailed just once in the contest. Park held a 3-2 lead just 42 seconds into the contest. The game was tied 4-4 early. But two Sky Wilson (Jr., Indio, Calif.) free throws with 17:06 remaining in the first half put Northwest on top for good.

Wilson's two free throws started an 11-0 Bearcat run, which was keyed by a Parker three-pointer. That spurt left the 'Cats with a 15-4 advantage. Park's Winston Williams kept the Pirates close with a three-pointer to make it 23-18 with nine minutes left until halftime.

But another Bearcat scoring streak left Northwest in control. After Williams' three, Northwest's Victor James (Fr., Crowley, Texas) hit a jumper and started a 13-0 Bearcat outburst. James scored six points in the run, leaving Northwest with a 36-18 advantage with three minutes until intermission. The 'Cats finished out the first half with a three-pointer from Meyer and took a 42-21 lead into the locker room.

Northwest led 57-31 six minutes into the second half. Park's only real threat in the second half came when Corey Gupton scored twice, to cap a 7-0 run, pulling the Pirates within 19, 57-38. The Bearcats quickly pushed their advantage back over the 20-point mark and Park never threatened again. Northwest led by as many as 34 when Meyer hit his fifth three-pointer of the game. The 'Cats emptied the bench late, while Park closed the final margin to 23 points, 83-60.

Meyer was five-for-eight from three-point range and eight-of-11 overall. Parker was eight-of-10 overall and four-of-four from the free-throw line. Parker also dished out four assists and grabbed four steals. Wilson and James were also in double figures, adding 14 and 12 points, respectively. Byron Jackson (Jr., Phoenix, Ariz.) came off the bench to lead Northwest on the boards with eight rebounds.

The Bearcats are back in action Saturday afternoon at 4 p.m., facing Rockhurst University at Mason-Halpin Field House on the Rockhurst campus.
