Bearcats Open With 87-54 Victory Over Bethel

MARYVILLE , Mo. - No. 16-ranked Northwest Missouri State University started its 2003-04 season with an 87-54 victory over Bethel College Tuesday night at Bearcat Arena.

Northwest scored the first seven points of the contest and never trailed. Austin Meyer (Soph., Blue Springs, Mo.) started the scoring with a conventional three-point play. A bucket each from Jesse Shaw (Jr., Lincoln, Neb.) and Joe Principe (Sr., Gladstone, Mo.) pushed the advantage to 7-0.

Bethel was still within four points, 24-20, with 6:16 remaining in the first half when Ryan Gerber scored, was fouled and converted the free throw. The Bearcats quickly gained control from there. A Shaw layup with 1:40 remaining in the half put Northwest on top by 11. Kelvin Parker (Sr., Raytown, Mo.) then took over. Parker buried a three-pointer, scored on a layup and found Shaw for a layup, all within the final 1:10 of the half. Parker's outburst left Northwest with an 18-point halftime lead, 41-23.

Adrian Howie hit a three-pointer for Bethel College just more than four minutes into the second half to pull the Threshers within 15, 47-32. Another Howie bucket made it 53-38 with 13:16 remaining in the contest. But that's as close as Bethel would get. Keanan Weir (Sr., Detroit, Mich.) scored to put Northwest up 17. Ryan Morley (Sr., Maryville, Mo.) followed that with two straight buckets, pushing the Bearcat advantage to 21 points.

Northwest cruised to the 33-point victory from there. Every Northwest player in uniform saw at least five minutes of game action.

All but one Bearcat in uniform scored in the contest. Parker and Weir each scored 13 to lead Northwest. Meyer added 11 and Travis Gardner (Jr., Minneapolis, Minn.) added 10 in his Bearcat debut. Principe led the way on the boards, pulling down six rebounds. Northwest enjoyed a 40-25 advantage on the boards.

Tyler Weinbrenner and Jason Gregory each scored 12 points to lead Bethel. The Threshers fell to 4-1.
