Lowell fighting to defend her title at MIAA Championships

SMITHVILLE, Mo. – Looking to defend her title, Northwest Missouri State junior Cassie Lowell finished the first day of the MIAA Women’s Golf Championships just five strokes off the lead Monday at Paradise Pointe Golf Club.

Lowell fired a first round 76 to sit in third place and five strokes behind the clubhouse leader, Aly Seng of Central Oklahoma.

The Bronchos hold the team lead after day one with a 301, while Northeastern State sits in second place after a first round 310. The Bearcats sit in third after shooting a 324 and hold a five stroke lead over Truman State (329), while Missouri Western rounds out the top five with a 331.

Two Northwest individuals sit in the top 20 after day as Taylor Gard checked in at 11th and Steph Charteris finished Monday tied for 19th. Gard finished day one with an 80, while Charteris fired an 83.

Kristina D’Angela tallied the final score for the Bearcats with a first round 85.

UCO’s Erica Bensch separates Lowell from first place as she fired a 75 Monday to sit in second place.

Tuesday’s second and final round will tee off with a shotgun start at 9 a.m. on the Posse Course at Paradise Pointe.
