Charteris in hunt for fourth title after day 1
ST. JOSEPH, Mo. – Steph Charteris fired a first round 82 to sit just seven strokes off the lead after Sunday’s first round of the Green and Gold Classic.
The Northwest Missouri State women’s golf team shares the tournament with Missouri Western as the Bearcats will host Monday’s second round at Mozingo Lake Golf Course.
Charteris stands in fifth place and is +10 after the first round standing tied with Erica Bensch of Central Oklahoma. Bensch’s teammate Aly Seng fired a 75 on Sunday to hold the lead as her Bronchos also hold a commanding 31 stroke lead with a 313 first round.
Northwest sits in fifth as a team after a first round 358 while MIAA foe Nebraska-Kearney sits in second with a 344. Missouri Western closed Sunday with a 350 and sits in third as Southwest Minnesota State finished just one stroke better than the Bearcats and sits in fourth.
Cassie Lowell and Ashley Powers struggled in the high winds Sunday with identical scores of 91 and sit tied for 23rd.
The other two scorers for Northwest, Taylor Gard and Kristina D’Angela finished with a 94 and 97.
Two Bearcats did fight to finish in the top 30 Sunday playing as individuals, Brooke Byland and Amber Norman. Both Byland and Norman finished with a first round 93.
The Green and Gold Classic will tee off early Monday morning with second round action from Mozingo Lake Golf Course.
