Lowell paces Bearcats in first round
KANSAS CITY, Mo. – Paced by sophomore Cassie Lowell, the Northwest Missouri State golf team grabbed hold of a one stroke lead and sits in first place after day one of the Avila Invitational at the Fred Arbansas Golf Club.
Lowell continued her solid play with 76, her lowest round of the 2011-12 season. She fired a front nine 37 and finished up her round with a 39 on the back nine. Missouri Western’s Natalie Bird shares the first round lead with Lowell as she also finished with a 76.
The Griffons sit just one stroke back as a team of the Bearcats in second place at 325. Northwest finished with a 324 and is 29 strokes better than third place William Jewell while host Avila sits in fourth.
A pair of Bearcats joins Lowell near the top of the leaderboard as Steph Charteris and Kristina D’Angela closed out day one in third and fourth place respectively. Charteris shot a first round 80 and sits behind Lowell and Bird while D’Angela is just one shot back of Charteris after firing an 81.
Taylor Gard capped the Bearcat scoring with an 87 while Jacy Gasper shot a first round 90.
The Bearcats will try to hold off the Griffons for a third time this spring as teams return to the course Tuesday morning for a final round shotgun start.
