Team effort leads Northwest to first title of 2012
ST. JOSEPH, Mo. – All five Northwest Missouri State golfers finished in the top 10 to close out the Green & Gold Classic and propel the Bearcats to their first team title of the spring season Tuesday at Fairview Golf Course.
The Bearcats held off MIAA rival Missouri Western with a 657 while the Griffons shot a two day score of 662. It is the second consecutive tournament Northwest has finished ahead of MWSU after doing so for the first time at the Missouri Western Invite earlier in March.
Northwest was paced by sophomore Cassie Lowell, who earned her 16th top-five finish by tallying a 79 on Tuesday for a two round score of 161. Lowell finished just one stroke behind individual champion Kaitlyn Schwartze of Lincoln who led from start to finish.
All five Bearcats scored almost identical scores as Steph Charteris carded an 86-81-167 for a sixth place finish. In seventh place was Ashley Powers with a 85-83-168 while Kristina D’Angela and Taylor Gard tied for eighth.
D’Angela shot a second round 86 while Gard was unable to repeat her career performance from Monday with a 91; the two day score for the eighth place finishers stood at 169 which also tied with Missouri Western’s Kristen Cooley.
Lincoln finished third behind the Griffons, while William Jewell placed fourth and Graceland rounded out the five schools in fifth.
Northwest continues action next week as they travel to the Avila Invitational before preparing for the MIAA Championships April 16-17 in Kansas City.
