Second-place finish ends fall season
KANSAS CITY, Mo.-Northwest Missouri State placed four golfers in the top 12 and placed second of nine teams at Avila Fall Invitational hosted Monday and Tuesday by Fred Arbanas Golf Course at Longview Lakes.
The tournament concludes a seven-event, fall season for the Bearcats, who won three tournaments and placed no lower than fourth.
Nearly the same credentials apply to Northwest freshman golfer Cassie Lowell, who placed third at Avila at 23-over-par. In seven fall events, Lowell won two and placed no lower than fourth individually.
Fort Hays State's Jordan Nixon and Park University's Plern Prombboobpa tied for medalist honors at Avila with a 14-over-par 158. Prombboobpa entered the final round with a one-stroke lead against Lowell, who shot a 10-over-par 82 Monday. Nixon made up three strokes Tuesday to tie for the lead.
Nixon led four Fort Hays State golfers who placed in the top seven and helped the Tigers to a 22-stroke win against Northwest in the team standings. Baker finished third, 44 strokes behind Northwest, while host-Avila took fourth.
The meet was the final collegiate event for Northwest junior Megan Chaney, who will student teach this spring and earn her degree in three years. Chaney tied for ninth place at Avila after firing back-to-back rounds of 89. Chaney turned in five top-10 finishes in seven fall events.
