Northwest, Lowell third at home tourney
MARYVILLE, Mo.-Nebraska-Omaha senior Ricca Soper shot an even-par 72 Friday to lead the Mavericks to a first-place finish at the Bearcat Fall Golf Classic hosted by Mozingo Lake Golf Course Thursday and Friday. Soper finished the 36-hole event at 7-over-par.
Soper posted four birdies and four bogeys in helping Nebraska-Omaha break its day one tie with Missouri Western. The Mavericks (642) were 25 strokes better than the Griffons (667), who placed second. Host Northwest Missouri State (675) finished eight shots behind Missouri Western in third place.
Missouri Western's Natalie Bird, who led the field by two strokes heading into Friday's finale, posted a nine on the par-5 sixth hole and finished in a tie for third place at 16-over-par. Nebraska-Omaha's Melyssa Doerr finished one stroke better in second place following a round two 77.
Northwest's top finisher Cassie Lowell tied Bird for third place after shooting 82 Friday. Lowell has placed no worse than fourth in six fall tournaments. Missouri Western's Casi Webb rounded out the top five at 20-over-par.
The four NAIA programs each improved their team score by more than 25 strokes when comparing Thursday to Friday. Rockhurst's Molly McCormack shot 82 Friday to earn a 10th-place finish at 26-over-par. Rockhurst finished 63 strokes behind Northwest in fourth place.
William Jewell (795), Peru State (802) and Ottawa (827) rounded out the team scoring. A total of 40 golfers competed in the two-day event.
