Northwest six strokes back after day one
MARYVILLE, Mo.-Missouri Western's Natalie Bird fired a four-over-par 76 to lead a group of 39 golfers competing at the Bearcat Fall Classic hosted by Mozingo Lake Golf Course Thursday and Friday. Missouri Western and Nebraska-Omaha are tied atop the team standings with 325 strokes. Host Northwest Missouri State is six strokes back in third place.
The trio of MIAA programs holds a sizable lead against four NAIA schools heading into Friday's final round. Rockhurst (382) is in fourth place, 51 strokes behind Northwest. William Jewell (411), Peru State (419) and Ottawa (427) also comprise the seven-team field.
Bird holds a two-stroke advantage against Northwest's Cassie Lowell. Nebraska-Omaha's Ricca Soper and Northwest's Jessica Feuerbach are three strokes back in third place. Omaha's Brooke Thilges shot an 81 and rounds out the top five.
Northwest's 331 is its fourth-best round of the fall season. Feuerbach's 79 (seven-over-par) follows Tuesday's 79 (six-over-par) which came in the final round of the UNO Fall Classic. Teammate Megan Chaney is in 12th place after an opening round 85. Lauren Atkinson shot a collegiate-best 89 and is one of three Bearcats to post that score.
