Lowell fires record 73 in first collegiate meet
COUNCIL BLUFFS, Iowa-Northwest Missouri State freshman Cassie Lowell shot a 1-over-par 73 in the final round of Iowa Western's Lady Reiver Classic Friday at Bent Tree Golf Club. It was the first collegiate meet for Lowell who placed third of 51 competitors at 12-over-par.
Lowell's 73 is 10 strokes better than the program's previous 18-hole record of 11-over-par held by teammates Megan Chaney and Jessica Feuerbach. Lowell's two-round total of 156 is 11 strokes better than Northwest's 36-hole record set by Chaney last season.
Lowell led the Bearcats to a third-place finish behind MIAA foes Nebraska-Omaha and Missouri Western which placed first and second, respectively. Nebraska-Omaha's Danielle Suponchick took medalist honors at 4-over-par. Teammate Ricca Soper placed second, one stroke ahead of Lowell.
The field of nine teams also included Minnesota State (fourth place), four Iowa community colleges and AIG, an NAIA program. The host Reivers placed sixth.
Northwest's team included Feuerbach (t16th), Erin Luchtel (t19th), Tess Edwards (t23rd) and Chaney (t26th). The Bearcats shot 346 Thursday and 338 Friday for a team score of 684.
Next Up: Northwest will compete at Graceland's Yellowjacket Fall Invitational Sept. 18.
