Women's Golf Tees Off Thursday
MARYVILLE, Mo.-The Northwest Missouri State women's golf team is set to make history Thursday.
Eight student-athletes will tee off at the Bearcat Invitational held at Mozingo Lake Golf Course starting at 9 a.m. They will become the charter members of the Northwest program, which was announced as the Bearcats' 16th varsity sport in the spring of 2006. Pat McLaughlin is the team's first coach.
An opening reception and a brief ceremony will be held prior to the start of the event to celebrate the beginning of the women's program at Northwest. The Bearcats will then compete against five other programs in an 18-hole competition.
McLaughlin and his daughter, Megan, played a significant role in helping the Bearcat program gain varsity status. They helped form the University's first club team in the spring of 2001 and helped jumpstart the sport at Northwest. Pat was the club team coach while Megan became one of the club's first members.
The Northwest Board of Regents agreed to add the sport May 23, 2006. Northwest joins Truman, Missouri Western and Fort Hays as MIAA institutions that sponsor women's golf. It takes six teams in a conference to become recognized by the NCAA and to qualify for postseason play.
The first signing class was announced back on May 17. It consisted of Sydney Askin (Parkville, Mo.), Lauren Atkinson (Parkville, Mo.), Hanna Bowlin (Raytown, Mo.), Jessica Feuerbach (Iowa City, Iowa), Sarah Hayes (Maryville, Mo.) and Erin Luchtel (Grain valley, Mo.). Adrienne Taylor (Marceline, Mo.) and Lindsey Werdehausen (Huntsville, Mo.) signed National Letters of Intent on May 30.
