Women's Golf Added for 2007-08

MARYVILLE, Mo. – The Northwest Missouri State Board of Regents agreed to add the intercollegiate sport of women's golf to begin for the 2007-08 academic year. The Board of Regents made the announcement today at the J.W. Jones Student Union on campus. Women's golf will bring the Northwest total of intercollegiate sports to 17.

"Northwest remains committed to providing increased opportunities for women student-athletes," said director of athletics Dr. Bob Boerigter. "Expanding opportunities for competition within our region make the addition of this sport very appropriate for us as we respond to the sustained interest that has been present on our campus in women's golf.

"We plan to encourage other MIAA schools that currently do not sponsor women's golf to follow our lead and to add this opportunity for women student-athletes."

For the 2005-06 season, there are currently two MIAA schools who sponsor women's golf, Truman State and Missouri Western State. Fort Hays (Kan.) State, who joins the league begginning in 2006-07, has intercollegiate women's golf. Once four MIAA schools sponsor a sport on the intercollegiate level, there can be a conference tournament. It takes six teams in a conference to become recognized by the NCAA.
