Shaw and Chappelear sign with NFL teams
MARYVILLE, Mo. – Two former Northwest Missouri State football players signed free agent contracts Saturday night following the conclusion of the 2013 NFL Draft.
Wide Receiver Tyler Shaw and defensive lineman Travis Chappelear join the list of Bearcat football players that enter NFL rookie camps this summer.
Shaw will join the Arizona Cardinals after they started talks in the final round of the draft. The Cardinals selected tight end D.C. Jefferson from Rutgers University with their final selection before quickly calling Shaw once the draft concluded and signing the speedy receiver to a free agent contract.
The St. Louis native will join one of the league’s top receivers in Larry Fitzgerald. Arizona also drafted wide receiver Ryan Swope of Texas A&M in the sixth round.
Chappelear will head to the Cincinnati Bengals, as the defensive lineman agreed to sign shortly after the draft ended Saturday night as well.
After transferring from Missouri State, the Urbana, Mo., native caught NFL scouts attention after posting a 4.7 40-yard dash time including once during his Pro Day workout at Northwest.
Chappelear joins one of the better defensive units in the NFL, as the Bengals finished 10-6 and advanced to the playoffs last season.
The duo will likely give the Bearcats four former players on NFL teams when camps open this summer. Chad Kilgore signed a free agent contract with the Kansas City Chiefs this spring, while according to NFL insiders Dave Tollefson is expected to sign with the New York Giants.
