Final fall scrimmage brings camp to close
MARYVILLE, Mo. – The final scrimmage for the Northwest Missouri State football team was about being more consistent on the offensive and defensive sides of the ball as fall camp officially came to a close Thursday night.
From the first day of camp a number of players continued to improve as shown by the Green team’s execution in a 49-0 win. The modified scrimmage saw the Green team march 60 yards on six plays on their first possession, as Trevor Adams found Dearis Flint for a 36-yard touchdown.
Looking for a higher completion percentage from last week’s scrimmage, Adams completed 10-of-14 passes with two scores in the first half helping the Green squad build a 27-0 lead.
“I was very happy with the way our guys competed,” said second-year head coach Adam Dorrel. “I was pleased with the White team for coming out and competing and giving our guys the look they needed.”
There were a number of improvements in the second and final scrimmage before the Bearcats return to practice Saturday to begin preparations for East Central (Okla.). Building on each day and each week was a theme for the Northwest football team during camp and despite the lopsided score of the final scrimmage, a solid performance from the defensive side of the ball was noticeable as well.
“I don’t think we gave up as many big plays and that was one thing I wanted to see change from a week ago,” Dorrel said. “Offensively we cut down on some careless turnovers so overall the staff was very pleased.”
After a record setting year last season, Dorrel still sees room for improvement for the offense. Northwest scored the second most points in college football a year ago, regardless of division and return nine guys on the offensive side of the ball that saw major playing time.
“Offensively we can still be a little crisper,” Dorrel said. “I liked our tempo, but would still like to see a little more consistency in the run game.”
Northwest opens its season next Thursday at Bearcat Stadium against East Central for the only non-conference game on the Bearcats’ schedule. Kickoff is slated for 7 p.m.
