Northwest opens season at No. 3
MARYVILLE, Mo. – For the second straight season the Northwest Missouri State football team will open the season at No. 3 announced Monday by the American Football Coaches Association.
The Bearcats have been ranked in 138 weeks of a possible 148 since the AFCA Top 25 poll debut in 2000. Northwest opened the season at No. 3 and spent two weeks at No. 1 during the 2011 season before finishing the year ranked 5th.
The defending national champion Pittsburg State Gorillas open the season as the top ranked team receiving 21 first place votes followed by Minnesota-Duluth who took five first place votes. The Bearcats received one first place vote, followed by Midwestern State and last year’s national runner-up Wayne State (Mich.), both of which received one first place votes as well.
Rounding out the top 10 is Colorado State-Pueblo at No. 6, followed by Grand Valley State at No. 7, Valdosta State at No. 8, and Winston-Salem State 9th as the Rams also captured one first place vote. Abilene Christian completed the top 10.
A pair of MIAA opponents on the Bearcats schedule also cracked the top 25 as Missouri Western checks in at No. 18 and Washburn at No. 20. Northwest travels to Washburn on Oct. 29 and host the rival Griffons in the regular season finale on Nov. 10.
Nebraska-Kearney, Central Missouri and East Central (Okla.) were all receiving votes as well. Northwest opens its season Aug. 30 against East Central at Bearcat Stadium.
